Spain roadtrip (Madrid → Málaga) vs. Tangier for the 2027 Solar Eclipse – Which option you would choose?
Hi,
My girlfriend and I are planning to see the total solar eclipse on August 2, 2027 and are deciding between a short Spain roadtrip or Morocco (Tangier region). We have around 7 (max. 10) days and want a relaxed holiday.
Option 1: Road Trip from Madrid to Málaga
- We have already done a full Andalusia loop last year and quite enjoyed it, but this time, we’d focus on scenic stops between Madrid and Málaga
- Toledo is on my list, but I’m open to other recommendations—especially hidden gems in the Spanish hinterland (I loved Granada last year)
- For the eclipse, I’d prefer to stay outside Málaga (but near the airport) in a natural, quiet setting for the last 2–3 nights. Last year we spend our time in Malaga near to Torremolinos and it felt quite touristic tbh
Option 2: Tangier, Morocco
- The eclipse path is near Tangier, and this seems like a more laid-back option than southern Morocco (which I’d save for a separate trip)
- I’m curious: What are the best day-trip destinations from Tangier? (Culture, landscapes, coastal spots?)
- I’m slightly more cautious about Morocco: How does the Tangier region compare in terms of safety, infrastructure, and overall vibe?
Our preferences:
- Slow paced and flexible. We’d rent a car in both countries
- we prefer Airbnbs/self-catering (budget is up to €100/night), but hotels are fine too
- we'd like beautiful scenery, local charm, and a stress-free experience
- my girlfriend is more adventurous; I’m more of a planner who is more on the cautious side
At the moment we tend a little a bit more to Tangier as it is less complicated and would probably feel less rushed than a roadtrip, but I am not sure, if it is as beautiful as the spanish backcountry with its beautiful cities like Toledo or Granada.
If you had to choose between these two for a relaxed, scenic eclipse trip, which would you pick and why? Any must-see stops in central/southern Spain or day trips from Tangier that fit our vibe?
Thanks for your thoughts!
