Highly empathetic chicken owners, did you ever decide to cull and eat your own chickens?

like the title says. I've been interested in homesteading later on in life but this always popped in my head, what do you do if you're loves die? or do you decide to give them the boot before that happens? do you just treat them like livestock and not pets anymore? I love my animals and I was wondering if any people just get used to it or I have to change the mindset beforehand
